They are selling you a TV signal that you cannot use, and then forcing you to pay for a device that allows you to use it. They are converting to digital specifically so that they can encrypt their signal and force users to lease their converter box. They could very easily convert to an all digital format without encryption, and older TVs would require a converter box, but one that could be purchased outright from a 3rd party for around $30.

What they are doing is eliminating the analog signal and replacing it with a digital one, because digital signals can be encrypted. Having a digital signal alone does not stop your modern TV from being able to get a signal. If you wanted to get the additional 2-way features that they are advertising will come along with the conversion, all you would have to do is simply order a cable box for each TV you wanted to use those features with. If Spectrum was really switching to an all digital format for the purpose of increasing quality, they could do so without the need for a converter box. Any modern TV can receive a digital signal directly from the wall.
